The new coronavirus does not stop sand dumping in Varadero, according to specialists from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma).
In 2019, the largest sand dumping process carried out in Cuba began there. The investment is maintained despite the restrictive measures promoted by the country due to the epidemic of the new coronavirus.
The project is in the second stage that includes the sectors of the Americas, up to the area considered the historic Varadero.
Now there is no tourism, which favors the dumping of sand and the workers comply with the elementary measures of physical distance despite the fact that they work in open space.
This action corresponds to the National Beach Recovery Program, linked to Tarea Vida, State Plan for Confronting Climate Change.
The activity is coordinated by the company Inversiones Gamma and the objective is to recover the beach from the environmental and tourist point of view and will make the beach grow in the order of 50 to 60 meters from the critical situation it had.
"It is a task that aims precisely at the development of tourism on the peninsula, Varadero is the main tourist center of the country, and the beach is its main natural resource, and this work is aimed precisely at that, to return those aesthetic conditions to the beach , recreational, use, which are what ultimately give weight to the work we are doing here on the beach of Varadero at the moment, says Dr. Ernesto Tristá, director of the Division of Coastal Engineering of the Inversiones Gamma Company) on the Secret Nature Facebook page.
Studies carried out since May 2013, confirm a loss of 50,000 cubic meters of sand over a period of five years.
The beach is expected to recover the volumes of sand required to cope with the effect of waves and strong surges associated with frequent meteorological events in the region. The area where the first phase of the project has already been completed begins to show signs of improvement. The investment will mitigate the erosive process.
"The scenario where we are also conducive without great risks for our specialists, which is the fundamental thing here, to be able to execute the investment and literally do our bit so that the country tomorrow can go towards a recovery as quickly as possible possible of the effects that this pandemic will have on the national economy, ”says Lic. Pavel Morales, specialist from the Coastal Engineering division of the Gamma Investment Company on the Facebook page of Naturaleza Secreta. (By Cristina Valdés Lescaille.
